O blink 182 era formado por três membros: Thomas Matthew Delonge (Tom) na guitarra, Markus Allan Hoppus (Mark) no baixo e Scott Raynor (Scott) na bateria. A banda era conhecida no mundo todo por suas melodias "punk rock" que tornaram-se sucessos nas paradas musicais e pelo seu humor nas canções. A banda diferenciava-se das outras de punk rock pelo conteúdo humorístico em contraste às letras de outras bandas do gênero que demonstram raiva ou conteúdo anti-político.
Em 1992, quando Mark mudou-se para San Diego, Califórnia, ele foi apresentado a Tom querendo começar uma banda. Aparentemente foi "amor à primeira vista" já que compartilhavam muitas coisas em comum. Para deixar a banda completa, eles decidiram que precisavam procurar por um baterista. Tom descobriu um garoto chamado Scott Raynor na sua escola que tocava bateria. Apesar de Scott ser um fã assíduo do Metallica, ele concordou em juntar-se à banda. Após considerar vários nomes (como Duck Tape) a banda concordou em chamar-se de "blink".
Até o fim de 1993 o blink lançou o EP Flyswatter. O demo foi gravado com material caseiro, o que explica a fraca qualidade de som. Quem escuta este EP percebe como a qualidade da banda mudou desde então. Antes do fim do ano, a banda lançou outro cassete conhecido como Buddha. Em torno de mil cópias foram produzidas pela Cargo Filter Records. No início de 1994 o blink lançou seu primeiro álbum, Cheshire Cat, lançado na Grilled Cheese Records. O álbum continha várias novas versões de músicas que apareciam no demo Buddha.
Pouco após o lançamento de Cheshire Cat o blink foi ameaçado legalmente por uma banda techno da Irlanda de mesmo nome. Para evitar um processo demorado, o blink adicionou os números 182 no final de seu nome. Apesar de haverem rumores do motivo pelos quais estes números foram escolhidos, todos os membros da banda deixaram claro que eles são totalmente aleatórios, porém há rumores de que o número originou-se do filme scarface, cujo qual Al Pacino fala 182 vezes a palavra "
Entrada de Travis
Devido ao estouro do punk rock na década de 1990 (devido a bandas como Green Day e The Offspring), o blink 182 assinou com os gigantes da MCA Records. Após mudarem-se para Encinitas, Califórnia, a banda gravou o álbum Dude Ranch com o produtor Mark Trombino. O álbum foi um sucesso e os dois singles, "Josie" e "Dammit" ficaram no topo das paradas dos Estados Unidos. Em 1998 a banda teve um problema com Scott, pelo forte consumo de bebidas . Apesar de que alguns acreditam que ele deixou o blink 182 para conseguir seu diploma na faculdade, ou talvez que ele preferisse ficar na cena underground, porém ainda não foi esclarecido o que aconteceu. Quando Scott desapareceu durante uma turnê pelos Estados Unidos, a banda precisou de outro baterista para substituí-lo por um concerto. Travis Barker, que estava tocando com a banda The Aquabats, com quem o blink 182 estava em turnê, decidiu tocar com eles aquela noite. Após aprender todo o set da banda em trinta minutos e tocando todas as canções com facilidade, Mark e Tom decidiram que Travis era o homem que a banda precisava e Scott foi separado do grupo.
Em 1999 foi lançado o aguardado Enema of the State. O álbum teve sucesso, e o blink 182 ficou famoso e entrou para o cenário musical central com aparições na MTV, com singles como "What's My Age Again", "Adam's Song" e "All the Small Things".A Musica All The Small Things foi uma música que humilhava todas as BoyBands BritÂnicas,incluindo principalmente a banda Backstreet Boys. A música de Enema of the State teve sua origem no mesmo estilo seguido por bandas como NOFX, Green Day e The Offspring, mas era mais acessível para o rádio e tinha letras com que mais adolescentes podiam identificar-se. Isso fez com que o blink perdesse sua credibilidade na cena punk principalmente pelo fato de que agora eles dividiam espaço com outras bandas populares de garotos, como os Backstreet Boys e o *NSYNC e foram tachados de "banda de garotinha adolescente" e de "terem se vendido por dinheiro".
Em 2001 o blink 182 continuava seu reinado como os reis do punk rock, gravando Take Off Your Pants And Jacket, que seguia as mesmas fórmulas básicas do sucesso Enema of the State. A banda continuou sem ganhar nenhuma credibilidade, mas seu sucesso no mundo rock ainda era evidente. No mesmo ano, apareceram na capa da revista "CosmoGirl" e ganharam um prêmio no "Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Award". Estas duas coisas fizeram com que a popularidade do blink caísse ainda mais no cenário punk, mas projetos laterais de Tom Delonge e de Travis Barker (The Transplants, Box Car Racer) fizeram com que sua credibilidade começasse a crescer lentamente novamente.
Em 2003 o blink ganharia de volta a maior parte de seu respeito. Em 2002, bandas como Good Charlotte, New Found Glory e Simple Plan seguiram o mesmo caminho do blink, que tocavam música punk enquanto tinham sucesso na MTV e entre os ouvintes de música popular. Isto fez com que as pessoas parcialmente esquecessem do impacto do blink 182 no punk rock, e concentrarem-se nas bandas populares do momento. Durante este tempo, o blink 182 fez seu álbum mais creditado até hoje. Descrita como uma auto-meditação na decadência romântica, seu quinto disco sem título apresentava os singles "Feeling This", "I Miss You", "Down" e uma influência dos anos 1980, "Always". Travis Barker confirmou que a banda deixou o álbum sem título para representar um blink totalmente novo. O álbum apresenta um tipo de música mais profundo do que qualquer outra coisa que o blink já tenha feito, e fez com que ganhassem mais credibilidade no rock moderno enquanto ainda eram exibidos na MTV e em estações de rádio populares. Os críticos compararam seu último álbum ao Dark Side of the Moon do Pink Floyd e também falaram que seu som ficou parecido com o estilo do The Police e do U2, apesar de que os membros da banda alegam ter tido maior influência do The Cure, cujo membro Robert Smith apareceu em "All of This". Segundo os ouvintes do álbum, as canções, junto com as letras, ficaram mais profundas. Uma turnê com a banda No Doubt no verão de 2004 também foi um sucesso. Depois da turnê, eles decidiram visitar a Irlanda para conhecer aqueles que já foram seus inimigos, a banda Blink irlandesa. Os rumores dizem que eles terão uma participação musical nos próximos meses.
Hiato indefinido
No momento Mark Hoppus e Travis Barker estão em um projeto musical chamado Plus 44 (ou +44), cujo álbum de estréia saiu em 14 de novembro de 2006. Seu single "No It Isn't" é uma canção feita por Mark para Tom, com trechos polêmicos como "vamos cortar os nossos pulsos e queimar algo bonito" e "por favor entenda, isso não é apenas um adeus, isso é um 'eu não aguento você'" , explicando assim o motivo do fim do Blink 182. Tom Delonge também está em uma nova banda, Angels and Airwaves (ou AVA), cujo primeiro álbum foi lançado em 23 de maio de 2006, We Don't Need To Whisper.
O Blink 182 lançou em 2005 uma coletânea com seus melhores hits, incluindo as novas canções "Another Girl Another Planet", cantada por Mark e gravada em dezembro de 2004 para o programa de Travis na MTV norte-mericana, Meet the Barkers e Not Now, cantada por Toms. Ambas possuem videoclipes, com cenas do passado musical da banda, algo como uma homenagem.
Tom DeLonge têm dado várias entrevistas, contando um pouco do fim da banda. Aparentemente, houve uma grande briga entre os integrantes, e dificilmente a banda Blink 182 irá voltar desse hiato indefinido.
Mark Hoppus em entrevista para os sítios da MTV e B182.com confirmou o fim da banda. De acordo com o ex-baixista do Blink, Tom Delonge, através de seu empresário, informou tanto ele como Travis Barker de que não continuaria na banda por não ter "controle pleno das ações e querer mais tempo com a família".
Travis Barker em entrevista acusou Tom de ter sido o causador tanto das brigas entre os integrantes como o fim do blink, dias depois em outra entrevista ele começou a chorar afirmando que Tom nunca mais falou com ele nem com o Mark. Afirmou que teria tentado falar com Tom, porém Tom ja tinha mudado de telefone com a intenção de não mais falar nem com Mark nem com Travis, segundo seu empresário. Tom Delonge está com o Angels and Airwaves onde faz Cover de algumas musicas do Blink 182 como : Down ,I miss you e outros.
